Description
The SLATED Forty Foot.
Located at the tip of Dublin Bay, in Sandycove, the Forty Foot is one of Ireland’s most famous bathing places.
On Christmas Day, the Forty Foot swim has become legendary amongst locals. I don’t think either of us are brave enough to try it though!
The Forty Foot is a promontory made up of rocks, and features a staircase that has been dug out to facilitate access to the sea. The corner it nestles in, offering stunning views across Dublin Bay.
Established over 250 years ago, it was exclusively a male bathing place, and the Sandycove Bathers Association ensured it remained officially a men’s bathing place until 2014. But women have been swimming there unofficially since the 1970’s.
The Forty Foot has truly found place in history especially in literature with James Joyce’s Ulysses character Buck Mulligan, who described the waters as “the snotgreen sea”. It also appears in the novels, At Swim-Two-Birds by Flann O’Brien, and At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O’Neill.
Here at SLATED we feel the best way to honour some of Ireland’s Landmarks and Special Places, is to Carve them in Stone.
We are delighted to team up with the wonderfully talented artist Killian Fitzpatrick who helped us create our vision of the Forty Foot.
All our slate pieces are cut by hand with a 150 year old slaters knife by Ed Hammond in our Dublin studio. Making each piece completely unique. Our beautiful natural slate pieces all have their own individually textured surface, being uniquely ridged or veined. Every product is backed with felt feet to prevent slippage.
Each SLATED piece is hand packed in our signature gift packaging, before making its way to your home to be used and loved.
If you would like to read more about the history of SLATED, we were featured in this lovely article all about our family heritage in The Irish Times.
